Mitsubishi likely for PG – but no final confirmation

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

PG Andersson, who should have decided on what car to drive in the upcoming Rally Sweden yesterday, still haven’t decided what car to drive in his home round of the WRC. However, it’s very much looking like PG will drive a Mitsubishi in group N. It may be his own Mitsubishi – but it may also be a newer Mitsu from England. Besides the group N plans, local paper VF claims that Peugeot Sweden has offered PG a drive in their Peugeot 207 Super2000 – the one that Sandell drove two years ago. PG is currently thinking about that bid.

MML Motorsports trying to get some buzz

Friday, February 6th, 2009

In an article in Crash.net, I can see John Easton, former team manager of RalliArt Europe trying to get some buzz out there regarding his new company MML Motorsports. MML seems to have taken over the Lancer WRCs and they’re also doing some kind of Evo X project in group N. Besides that, John speks warmly about their ability to build a brand new WRC car from scratch.

So, if they need buzz – I thought I should help. :) No, of course I’m joking. But facts are that MML is built upon the competence from RalliArt Europe, a team that I think holds a lot of competence and potential. Maybe it’s not likely – but I really hope that MML can assist one or another car brand to get into the sport with a Super2000 car…

Mitsubishi retires from Dakar – one step closer to Volkswagen in the WRC?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Yesterday, Mitsubishi announced that they will retire from cross country rallying, starting with next years Dakar. Mitsubishi’s decision is based on the current economical situation and it’s a huge strike against all cross country rallying since the marque has been quite dominant for a long, long time. However, this year they failed to win the Dakar after launching a new car based on the Lancer road car. Instead, the victory went to Volkswagen – that has now managed to win an event.

So, what does this mean to the WRC? Mitsubishi retired from the WRC a few years ago – and already before the financial crisis started they announced that they’re probably not coming back in a while. Now, a comeback seems to be even more distant – but Mitsubishi’s retirement can still be good to the WRC. Why? Because Volkswagen is thinking of entering! Volkswagen’s motorsport manager Kris Nissen has said that the brand will overlook all their motorsport activities and that WRC is one of the options they’re looking at.

Of course Volkswagen’s cross country involvement has costed a lot of money, and now that they’re winning they may want one or two more victories. However, without Mitsubishi those victories wont be worth very much since there in practice are no real concurrents in the races (RalliArt France will continue to run the Mitsu team privately, but that’s really not the same thing). And when Volkswagen has already considered retiring from the sport, it seems a little more likely when their main concurrent retires leaving them alone at the top. So, it still remains to see what happens – but my guess is that Volkswagen will either retire instantly, or retire after a year or two. But I don’t think Volkswagen will leave all rallying activity. They’re in a quite OK economical situation, and when the others struggle they will probably challenge instead. A WRC bid shouldn’t be very distant – and there are already rumours about  a Prodrive led WRC challenge from Volkswagen. At least, Skoda (which is in practice a part of Volkswagen) has left the door open by saying that they will not enter the WRC.

My guess is that we’ll see Volkswagen in the WRC and that it’s not very far away…Time will show.

Petter goes to England

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

A solution for the season 2009 may be close for 2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg. The norweigan is without a drive since Subaru decided to retire, but after getting the entry time for Rally Norway extended one week he still got hopes to do his home rally. According to Norweigan newspaper smaalenene.no (read the article here), Petter has now went to England to get one step closer – and maybe even finalize – a deal.

Petter himself tells the newspaper that a solution could come today but even in 2 weeks – which would mean to late for the Rally Norway. There are many speculations on what Petter may be doing in England, where a meeting at MSport is probably the most common as well as a rumour about the Ramsport Ford team. However, England is currently hosting the Autosport Show which means that probably most manufacturers are present and the country has a lot of private teams. One example is MME (Mitsubishi Motorsports Europe) – the team that ran the Lancers in the WRC in previous years. That means that speculations are probably quite useless.
