Hirvonen wins Monte as expected – Ogier out just before the penultimate stage

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Hirvonen’s IRC appearance in Rally Monte Carlo ended up with a win – just as one would expect if the new Ford Fiesta Super2000 delivered without problems. It obviously did, so Hirvonen showed by leading the rally from the first to the last stage that it is a difference – no matter how small or big it might be – between WRC and IRC. Also it was really a flying start for the Fiesta – and it will certainly be interesting to see if the difference Hirvonen managed to held is just because of his skills or also because of the car. A new hint will be given in Rally Sweden in a few weeks, where Andreas Mikkelsen, Martin Prokop, Bernardo Sousa and Janne Tuohino will drive the car.

Sebastien Ogier was 2nd placed going into the last loop, but on his way to the penultimate special stage his car broke down and he had to retire. This gave Juho Hänninen the 2nd place after a solid but not stunning drive throughout the weekend, where many people removed themselves from the chance of winning by making mistakes, including Meeke, Sarrazin, and others.

The standings after SS15 – and most probably the final results – are:

1. Hirvonen / Lehtinen, 4h32min 58.5s
2. Hänninen / Markula, +1min 51.4s
3. Vouilloz / Veillas, +3min 19.1s
4. Sarrazin / Renucci, +7min 25.5s
5. Kopecky / Stary, +8min 48.7s
6. Wilks / Pugh, +9min 24.5s
7. Magalhaes / Magalhaes, +9min 45.4s
8. Vigion / Prevot, +13min 33.5s

Skoda UK adds Argentina and Brazil for Wilks

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

It seems like Skoda UK will add Rally Argentina and Rally de Curitiba in Brazil to Guy Wilks IRC calendar. This means, as far as I understand, that Wilks’ calendar now contains 9 events this year (or out 12 in the IRC). Wilks is currently on 5th place in Rally Monte Carlo with three stages to go tonight before the rally ends.

Confirmed: Wilks and Skoda UK enters IRC

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I’ve already reported twice about the fact that Guy Wilks along with co-driver Phil Pugh will enter the IRC along with Skoda UK in 2010, driving a Skoda Fabia Super2000 as a satellite team for the Skoda Motorsport team. However, now it’s finally confirmed. I wont repeat what I’ve already written once again, so refer to my previous posts or to Wilks’ own website.

PG Andersson to choose between S2000 and Grp N based on the result in the Norweigan Sigdalsrally this weekend

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Not much have been heard about PG Andersson lately, but in today’s NWT PG says that his drive in the Norweigan Championship round Sigdalsrallyt this weekend (PG made a late entry) will be used to decide if he’s gonna do Rally Sweden in a Super2000 rental car or in his own Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX. PG will drive the Mitsubishi in Norway along with co-driver Anders Fredriksson, since his regular co-driver Jonas Andersson is busy at the side of Mads Östberg.

The whole competition will be a test where PG tries wether he can keep the speed up with Eyvind Brynhildsen in his Skoda Fabia Super2000. PG says that renting a Super2000 car costs twice as much as doing the home rally in his own Mitsubishi – and if he can, he will save the money for later:

- I’ve got the money it takes, but if I can do two rallies instead of one for them I would prefer that, says PG.

Besides the start in Rally Sweden, which now seems to be totally confirmed, PG is looking at entering the IRC round Rally Italia Sardinia in June. For that rally he would rent a Super2000 car. However, the first thing after Sigdalsrallyt for PG is to do ice notes for Guy Wilks in Rally Monte Carlo later this month. As I revealed yesterday, Wilks is expected to confirm his agreement with Skoda UK today announcing a drive in the 2010 IRC.

Here is a clip of a close moment for Wilks in the Skoda during last years Rally of Scotland:

Guy Wilks likely to do the IRC in Skoda Fabia Super2000

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Guy Wilks did Rally Scotland this year in a Skoda, and since a while rumours have also placed him in the Fabia Super2000 for 2010 – backed by Skoda UK. The rumours are getting more intense, and multiple sources now claim that the deal is done an that the official announcement is really close. The IRC lineup for 2010 keeps growing impressively…
