Urmo Aava’s season in jeopardy because of budget trouble

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Just a bit more than a month ago, Urmo Aava presented his plans for 2009 with a drive in Stobart Ford. Aava has struggled during the first two rallies of the season. In Ireland he went off after an initial impressive performance, and in Norway he finished quite low down the standings after struggling the whole weekend.

Now, it also seems that Aava’s budget is far from complete – and Stobart is just paying a small amount of Aava’s budget this year. From what I know, the rest is mostly paid by some local Estonian companies and the Estonian tourism authority. Obviously, Aava is having problems to get enough money out there, which may cause him to miss some or all of the remaining rallies in the season.

Aava’s schedule until now has been Rally Ireland, Rally Norway, Rally of Portugal, Rally Italia-Sardinia, Rally Poland, Tour de Corse (France), Spain and Wales Rally GB.

Update: Ford crew member seriously injured but in stable condition

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Following the accident that happened to the Ford car following Henning Solberg on the recce, Norweigan newspaper Glomdalen reports that the condition of the man that got seriously injured in the accident is serious but stable. He is 32 years old, French citizen and has been transported by helicopter to Ullevåls University hospital in Oslo with head injuries and fractures. The other crew member of the car is British citizen and escaped the accident almost unhurt. Both men are members of the Stobart/Ford team.

The accident happened on a very narrow part of the stage called “The Mountain” and the car and the truck collided almost front-to-front. The truck driver and passenger escaped without serious injuries.

Ford’s testing became a mess

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Ford seems to be unlucky with testing before Rally Ireland. This Saturday, Jari-Matti Latvala collided with another car on his way from the Ford test. Latvala was going in a common road car but luckily escaped with some neck and shoulder pain.

On Monday Henning Solberg (Stobart) were scheduled to do his test, but a tragic incident stopped everything. Just when the test were scheduled to start, the team lost contact with one of the marshals that made sure noone got into the closed road. When the team got there they found out that the marshal had tragically had a heart attack. The ambulance arrived soon after, but the 60 years old man’s life couldn’t be saved.

Let’s hope for more luck in the rally than in the tests for Ford.

How does the wider snow tyres affect Rally Norway results?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

One interesting thing for the upcoming Rally Norway is the new, wider snow tyres (15″) that will be used. To reduce team costs, the tyres are no longer special narrow (16″) ones that can penetrate deep into the snow and find grip. Instead, the new tyres are the same dimensions as the wider gravel ones – which of course means more problems to get through the snow and get grip.

After Ford’s test in Sweden in December Jari-Matti Latvala told that the new tyre provided more grip than he had expected under braking – but that he doubted that it would work well if the snow was really deep. The Rally Norway regions are often quite snow rich, so that would mean that the tyre could cause problems there. And that would for sure mean that you should avoid to be first out on the stages to sweep the road.

The concerns are confirmed by Pirelli’s rally manager Mario Isola:

- We’ve tested the new tyre and it’s met all our expectations. It also fulfils our brief from the FIA to slow the cars. The wider tyre does not bite through the snow as effectively, so the cars slide more. The wear might also increase, but we will see.

So, this means a slower but probably more spectacular Rally Norway. And it sends a clear message to all drivers: make sure to position yourself in the standings not to be first on the road. Which means; avoid to lead the championship after Ireland (ok, maybe we can make exceptions here) – and don’t even think about being 15th after day one or day two. :)

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if the new tyre makes a visible difference or if it’s just same to everyone…

Video: Ford pre-Norway test in Jämtland

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Just before christmas the Ford team visited Kall, close to Östersund, in Sweden to test the Ford Focus WRC for the upcoming Rally Norway. There hasn’t been a lot of info from the test, so it’s amazing to now see a video of Mikko Hirvonen testing the car in snowy conditions. Video courtesy of Aeropibben.

Galli may still end up in Ford for 2009

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Gigi Galli had to leave his role in the Stobart team following the accident in Germany in 2008, but he got back already in December 2008 by finishing second in the Bettega Memorial rally sprint. For 2009, Galli hasn’t confirmed a programme, but he has expressed that he will get back into rallying. Now, Malcolm Wilson, managing director of M-Sport, has also confirmed that they are still talking to Galli’s management and talks about the Italian’s plans for 2009 as “unconfirmed”.

The Munchis team is lacking one driver, so there are certainly at least one fresh Ford to get. Maybe Galli is back soon?

Petter’s will decide his car for 2009 during next weekend

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Petter Solberg has released an official statement, quoted in full here:

- There are still some issues to sort out regarding which car I will be driving this season, but a decision will be made during next weekend.
Petter S.

So, finally we know when a decision will come – and this time the date is confirmed by Petter himself. Speculation has been running high for a while, with Citroen and Ford mentioned as marques – but lately even a Proton development/test role has been mentioned as an alternative, following Petter’s meeting with the Proton management.

Petter starts Rally Norway in his own team – or not at all

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

In an interview with Norweigan television (NRK), Petter Solberg confirms that if he will start Rally Norway it will be in his own team – not as a teammate to Sebastian Loeb. Also, he confirms that a start will take place in either Citroen or Ford and that a resolution can be expected in the next few days if he will start the rally or not.
