Volkswagen decides to defend Dakar title and puts WRC plan on hold

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Volkswagen has announced they’re gonna defend their title in Dakar – meaning their previously rumoured entry in the WRC is put on hold. After the decision one month ago by Mitsubishi to pull out, many people expected VW to do the same – something that obviously didn’t happen. Maybe VW have now decided to wait for the new class coming after Super2000, believed to be based on a 1,6l engine with turbo?

No matter what, Volkswagen will make at least one more try in Dakar – meaning that the former WRC champion Carlos Sainz will get one more chans to win the desert rally – and also that the WRC will have to wait before the German brand gets into the championship.

Mitsubishi retires from Dakar – one step closer to Volkswagen in the WRC?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Yesterday, Mitsubishi announced that they will retire from cross country rallying, starting with next years Dakar. Mitsubishi’s decision is based on the current economical situation and it’s a huge strike against all cross country rallying since the marque has been quite dominant for a long, long time. However, this year they failed to win the Dakar after launching a new car based on the Lancer road car. Instead, the victory went to Volkswagen – that has now managed to win an event.

So, what does this mean to the WRC? Mitsubishi retired from the WRC a few years ago – and already before the financial crisis started they announced that they’re probably not coming back in a while. Now, a comeback seems to be even more distant – but Mitsubishi’s retirement can still be good to the WRC. Why? Because Volkswagen is thinking of entering! Volkswagen’s motorsport manager Kris Nissen has said that the brand will overlook all their motorsport activities and that WRC is one of the options they’re looking at.

Of course Volkswagen’s cross country involvement has costed a lot of money, and now that they’re winning they may want one or two more victories. However, without Mitsubishi those victories wont be worth very much since there in practice are no real concurrents in the races (RalliArt France will continue to run the Mitsu team privately, but that’s really not the same thing). And when Volkswagen has already considered retiring from the sport, it seems a little more likely when their main concurrent retires leaving them alone at the top. So, it still remains to see what happens – but my guess is that Volkswagen will either retire instantly, or retire after a year or two. But I don’t think Volkswagen will leave all rallying activity. They’re in a quite OK economical situation, and when the others struggle they will probably challenge instead. A WRC bid shouldn’t be very distant – and there are already rumours about  a Prodrive led WRC challenge from Volkswagen. At least, Skoda (which is in practice a part of Volkswagen) has left the door open by saying that they will not enter the WRC.

My guess is that we’ll see Volkswagen in the WRC and that it’s not very far away…Time will show.

Al-Attiyah negotiating with Skoda – may bring Tina Thörner back into the WRC

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar, reigning FIA Baja Champion, did a decent run in this years Dakar before missing out on some waypoints because of technical problems, that later on made the organisers exclude him and Swedish co-driver Tina Thörner from the rally. However, besides rally raid Al-Attiyah is also a very experienced competitor in the PWRC – and now he want’s to come back there. Currently he is negotiating with Skoda with the aim to do the full PWRC championship 2009 in a Skoda Fabia Super2000.

Nasser has previously been co-driven by different people – but this time Tina Thörner would be his choice. Tina is a unique profile and her co-driver career started already in 1990. She has gone with different drivers in both rally raid and WRC, including legendary names as Ari Vatanen, Colin McRae, Jutta Kleinschmidt and this years Dakar winner Giniel DeVilliers.

So, let’s hope that Al-Attiyah, Thörner and Skoda get their pieces together. To start in Norway is too late, but for PWRC you can exclude two events of the year – so that’s not a problem. To see them going into the PWRC could make up for a decent fight and comparison with Thörner’s countryman Patrik Sandell – who drives Skoda for the Red Bull Team. Taking into account that also Flodin competes in the PWRC with the Uspenskiy Rally Team, it would mean three Swedes able to fight in the PWRC top.

Skoda not considering to enter the WRC – a sign of Volkswagen getting into the championship?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Skoda will not enter the WRC within the next 2-3 years, according to sources. They are commited to five IRC races this year, the currently ongoing Rally Monte Carlo and then Portugal, Russia, Czech (Barum Rally) and Italy (San Remo) – and will probably continue competing in the IRC even the next few years. This may be a sign of Volkswagen being really serious about their considerations of entering the World Rally Championship. As I’ve previously mentioned here, Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen has admitted that VW would decide regarding their coming motorsport involvement after this years Dakar (=now). I suppose that he wouldn’t say that – which of course starts a lot of rumours – if they were not serious. The announcement of Skoda makes it more likely in my opinion, since the VW group of companies probably wouldn’t want to compete against themself in the WRC.

The story will go on…

Will Volkswagen enter the WRC?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

For a long time, there have been rumours about Volkswagen entering the World Rally Championship with their Scirocco car. The team is speculated to be run by English company Prodrive, that ran the Subaru works team until their retirement in the end of 2008. Now the VW Motorsport Director Kris Nissen, known from the brands big Dakar engagement, reveals that the marque is seriously considering getting into the sport and the world championship.

Volkswagen is one of the worlds biggest car manufacturers, and according to Kris Nissen they want to be involved in motorsport on an international basis – like the Dakar or the WRC.  The plans for the brands future motorsport involvement will be finalized right after the Dakar, so a decision is to be expected quite soon.

For the notes, Volkswagen does already have  Super 2000 car based on the Polo and, develope by the regional actor Volkswagen Racing South Africa.

Super2000 and Dakar too much for van Merksteijn – cancels MSport order

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Van Merksteijn Motorsport – expected to run 2 Ford Focus WRC in the 2009 World Rally Championship – has cancelled their order of a 3rd Focus WRC’s from MSport according to Turbo Magazine. The whole thing seems to be caused by driver Peter van Merksteijn competing in the Dakar combined with the fact that FIA decided in December that Super2000 would replace the World Rally Cars as the main class of the WRC.

Van Merksteijn’s Dakar adventure ended early, but the Rally Raid formula seems to have made a strong impression him causing him to cancel the order of a 3rd WRC car from MSport. Van Merksteijn says that world rally cars are at a dead end street and that Super2000 doesn’t attract him after having driven WRC. However, it seems that Van Merksteijn will still be able to spend some of his money, since he’s now about to enter more Rally Raid competitions as preparations for Dakar 2010.
