Some clarifications regarding winter conditions

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

There has been recce going on today for Rally Sweden, and the impressions from the drivers seems to be varied. Home driver Patrik Sandell concluded the first day with the quote “a lot of snow but no ice = perfect for me!” while Norweigan driver Anders Gröndal has written on his blog that the rally will be “many of the stages will be more of a gravel rally than a winter rally”.

Gröndal’s reaction is interesting. Some drivers seems to be complaining about the conditions – and I understand if they have problems driving on snow. It’s complicated – for sure – and it should be! I’m sure I would be quite concerned if I were to drive a rally on it. However, Gröndal’s quote must be some other kind of problem, possibly some kind of overheating in his brain?! :) He has been driving a full day in the forests with around half a meter of snow all around him – and he can still claim that it’s not a winter rally? Come on, no matter if you reach the gravel – it’s still very much winter and wintry conditions, dear Gröndal. I’ll explain why…

So, here comes a short tutorial about the difference between snow, ice and water – dedicated to Anders Gröndal:

  • Snow is a type of precipation consisting of crystalline water ice (Full definition is on Wikipedia). In it’s fully frozen state snow feels really dry.
  • When snow melts, it results in fluid water. Quite logically, since it’s small ice crystals. This means, that when it rains on snow or when temperatures raise above zero – the snow on the road (since we’re talking rally here) gets softer and melts to water from the top.
  • If the temperature goes down below zero again, the partially melted snow layer will freeze again. The parts of the snow that is fully or partially melted will form a layer of solid ice on the road. This is the ice Gröndal is talking about – and missing.
  • If you’ve read all those three points, I guess you don’t find it very difficult. It’s like the very, very basics of winter weather and surfaces. And therefore it’s hard to understand that Gröndal doesn’t understand it. However, to call the current conditions (that for sure will include gravel after the loose snow is swept away) something else than proper winter conditions is just pure bullshit – and now you know why: The ice layer Gröndal is talking about is nice, for sure. But it doesn’t come from winter conditions – it comes from the _lack_ of winter conditions sometimes earlier in time…

So, for everyone of you coming to Sweden. Be cool. Gröndal will have to struggle if he isn’t good enough to drive on proper winter conditions (!) – but you will have a wonderful time with a lot of loose, cold snow out in the forests. It has just never melted since the winter started in early December – but to me that’s more a good sign than a bad!?!

Enjoy!

By the way, to Anders Gröndal: You don’t need to thank me for this guide. Be my guest! And if you still don’t understand – go to some local gas station here in Sweden and buy yourself a “glass” (icecream). Bring it into your cottage or hotel room and see what happens after a while. When it’s half frozen… Go out again and see what happens. Tada! It’s like magic!

Video: Patrik Sandell test [onboard] and Anders Gröndal testing in Norway

Patrik Sandell tested his Red Bull Skoda Fabia Super2000 in Norway earlier today. Here is a video of it (thank’s to Patrik himself for this!):

Maria Andersson to co-drive Henning Solberg in the 2010 World Rally Championship?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Speaking with WRC.com about his split with co-driver Cato Menkerud, Henning Solberg claims that a girl may partner him in the right seat this season:

- If things work out then I will have a girl in the car with me this year. It will be good for me, and for the sport too – at the moment there are no females competing at this level.

Thinking logically there are not much girls to choose from, as Henning is completely right in that no females are competing at the very highest level in the world. I can only think of two girls that are close enough to Henning to be potential, and they are Veronica Engan and Maria Andersson.

However, Veronica Engan is very less likely than Maria Andersson. Maria just quit her cooperation with Anders Gröndal – and the replacement is noone else than Veronica Engan. It seems unlikely that Veronica would quit after just one rally. But more important, I consider Swede Maria Andersson by far more expecienced. She has been doing a lot of drives in the Production World Rally Championship with Patrik Flodin, one or another WRC drive with Flodin, a season with Gröndal in a WRC car and also one or another WRC drive with George Tracey a few years ago. Besides that, she has partnered Mikkelsen in WRC and Brynhildsen in group N occasionally.

Engan has mostly been doing a group N drives with Brynhildsen, and even though I don’t have her complete record I think that the experience of Andersson makes the choice quite easy. In the end of the day, I can’t imagine that Henning talks of anyone else than Maria Andersson for his WRC challenge 2010 – given that it’s a girl.

Video: Anders Gröndal winter-testing in Norway

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Anders Gröndal tested his Subaru Impreza WRC today in Norway. The conditions seemed to be really snowy and the temperature was at -17 degrees celcius. Watch for yourself:

I know that Mads Östberg tested with Gröndal earlier this week, but still there seems to be no dedicated video available from that test.

Gröndals test didn’t went very good. He had damper problems from the beginning – and something happened during the test that forced the team to cancel, and that also jeopardizes Gröndal’s scheduled local event Romhjulsrallyt, a few days after christmas.

First loop in Norway completed – close top but problems down the field

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Four stages have been run this morning i Rally Norway and the top field is close. After SS5 Kongsvinger Hirvonen leads the pack 4.8s before Sebastien Loeb. Latvala is rounding off the podium positions 25.7 after Hirvonen. The fight is close – Hirvonen took the lead on SS2 but was overtaken by Loeb on SS3 before he got the lead back on SS4.

Some people have had problems this morning, including both home runners in the Adapta World Rally Team. Anders Gröndal went off the road into a ditch on SS5. He managed to get back on the road, but the car is damaged and he is reported to have gearbox problems. Remains to see if the Adapta WRT can fix the problems in the remote service. No matter what, he is now more than 12 minutes off the lead. Also Östberg had problems on SS5 when he overtook a junction and had to reverse to get back on track. He lost around one minute on the stage and is now on 13th position – but with gearbox problems reported.

In PWRC Patrik Sandell shows the potential of the Skoda Fabia S2000 and leads the field. However, Andreas Mikkelsen has beaten Sandell in two stages in a row now, showing that the classical group N cars can still challenge. Sandell will have to look out not to be overtaken by Mikkelsen who is less than 10 seconds behind. For Flodin and Brynhildsen everything seems to have went wrong on SS5. Both have lost more than 11 minutes, but the problem is unknown. Clear is that they wont be battling for the PWRC victory.

The battle in Norway will continue at 12:51 local time with the Opaker stage.

More testing this weekend

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Besides Patrik Sandell(video), Henning Solberg and Petter Solberg many others have tested for Norway this weekend. Anders Gröndal rolled his Subaru during testing in Norway, but both he and the car escaped without major problems. Mads Östberg – same team and same test – went into the ditch, but also him without further problems. Their second day of testing is reported to have become more successful. Patrik Flodin and Andreas Mikkelsen tested in Lima while PG Andersson did a small warm-up on Sunday before his real test today, Monday. Also Russian youngster Evgeny Novikov has tested, first time in the Citroen C4WRC. The test is reported to have went well and Novikov got around 330 km’s in the car on full snow.

Norweigan youngster Anders Grøndal will join Mads Östberg in the Adapta World Rally Team for Rally Norway – confirmed today during a press conference in Norway. The team will be running two Subaru Impreza S14 directly backed by Prodrive in Norway and their driver Mads Östberg is confirmed to be running seven more events this year.
