Google Earth Maps of WRC and IRC events

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Since a few days, the french site PlaneteMarcus has published Google Earth map files for the IRC Rallye Monte Carlo 2010. What a nice christmas present, isn’t it? Maps are also available for use on the iPhone – which is even better. However, the iPhone version – created by StageTimes – cost’s a little.

Check the maps out here: http://planetemarcus.free.fr/googleearthmap.htm (link to iPhone app to the left on the page)

WRC and IRC calendars for 2010 in your phone, Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Last year I made a calendar on Google of all WRC events, allowing you to include it in your own Google Calendar, import it to your phone, Outlook, iCal on Mac etc. This year I’ve made the same – but it’s even more complete, since I’ve included IRC events too. The calendar includes the following information per rally: Championship (WRC/IRC), dates, location, surface and for WRC rallies support classes (JWRC, PWRC, SWRC).

You can reach the calendar in the following formats:

World Rally 2010 – XML format

World Rally 2010 – iCal format

World Rally 2010 – HTML format

If you don’t know how to use the formats listed above, don’t worry. Your calendar software help can probably help you, or if you use Google Calendar, try this link: Subscribe to public calendars – Google Calendar Help.

I’m back!

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

At least to a certain amount. I’m sorry about the really, really silent second part of the year 2009, but I’ve been so busy with work and other things that I haven’t had the time to entertain all my blog readers. It has really been a shame and it’s been disturbing me, while I haven’t found any time to do good posts. At the same time, preserving good quality requires time, and I’ve never had the intention to do any half-measures or posts without good research. So, I’m really sorry for being away so long.

Now I’m taking a new step, and I hope to come back with MaxAttack on a good level. However, I don’t know how much time I’ll have – so I really can’t make any promises. In numbers I think a good guess is a few weekly posts, compared to the daily posts that was my goal in the first half of this year. Here, you are really welcome to help me by e-mailing me your news tips, rumours, thoughts and insights that may save me some time; rasmus [ at ] maxattack.net.

I’ll be back really soon looking back at the 2009 season and a look forward to 2010.

WRC calendar 2009 in your Outlook, iCal, Google Calendar, etc.

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Since I’m quite a computer addict, working with the web every day, using my iPhone all the time, etc, etc – I thought it would be a good idea to have the WRC calendar as a shared Google calendar. So, I created one – and now you can use it to get this years WRC calendar integrated with your own digital calendar. Hope it helps you!

Just import the ICS link into your preferred viewer and you’ve got it all there. Here are the links (right click and choose copy link):

Back from the shadows…

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Okay, sorry all readers, I’ve been really passive for a while. Problem is I’ve been quite stuffed, both at work (check out what I do for a living at www.perfectfools.com) and in private. This does often mean I lose my motivation to write, and I rather do good blog posts when I want than bad blog posts when I don’t want…

So, I just wanted to say sorry for the long time off, but now I’m back! :)

Back in the game

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I’ve been ill having a really annoying flu for a few days, making me stay in the bed – just because I didn’t have much choice. So, sorry for not updating the blog, but now I’m on my way back to normal state and updates will be made again soon…

Competition makes up for better TV-coverage – but ISC has problems with live coverage

Friday, February 13th, 2009

ISC and WRC.com seems to have worked hard following Eurosports heroic TV-coverage from the Rally Monte Carlo, with more than six hours of live stages sent. Now, WRC.com have announced 3 hrs of live coverage from Norway, but that’s not 100% true… Fact is that the coverage is sent immediately after the stages is complete – which to me isn’t at all live. The good thing with live coverage is to see what happens – as it happens – and get to know about good performances, problems, crashes and the conditions on the screen, not in a results list. All this is destroyed by “delayed live coverage”.

I’m not sure why they are delaying their coverage, but of course it’s hard to produce live TV. I was responsible for live coverage on the Swedish Rally website in 2007, and there was a lot of problems. However, it is possible. It can be done the old-fashioned way with satellites or an aircraft relaying images from the stages – or it may be done in more modern ways, as I proved with Nordisk Mobiltelefon and Daniel Carlsson in last years Swedish rally (see previous post). That solution was based on mobile technology and data transfer using a mobile network with really good coverage. It worked perfectly well!

However, a big part of ISCs problems is their old-school solution taking images from in-car cameras. At least when I worked at the Swedish Rally in 2007, ISC used camcorders in the cars and retrieved DV-tapes from the recorders during service brakes. Of course that’s hard to broadcast live. I guess they’re looking at better options after seeing Eurosport’s coverage from Monte. It’s quite obvious with the technology of today that it’s perfectly possible to do live coverage – you just have to want to work hard and invest. And that’s where the problems seems to have been with ISC… Let’s hope they shape up now.

One month of blogging

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Just realized that today it’s exactly one month since I launched this blog. Since then I’ve written 96 posts and tagged them with 304 tags. Here are some of the highlights:

If you like what I’m doing – I’ve got good news for you. Otherwise, they’re bad… This is funny – so I’ll keep on for a while! However, I know that quite many people read this blog every day – so please tell me… What do you want? And what do you think about this blog? I’d be really happy if you left a comment below or e-mail me at info (at) maxattack.net and tell me.

Thanks in advance! // Rasmus

It’s official: I’m a blogger

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

So, now it’s official. After a few years into rallying first as a supporter, then working with Daniel Carlsson and for 8 months during 2006-2007 also working with the Swedish Rally I’m finally gonna be “my own”. This blog will cover rallying in all forms, but mostly concentrated to the World Rally Championship (WRC) and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). Also, one post here and there will probably cover the Swedish Rally Championship.

I will write news, rumours, gossip and my own opinions about all kinds of things related to rallying. Just keep in mind it’s my own opinions, my own guesses, etc. etc. and I never use my blog as a source of “confirmed” information.

Soon I’ll get back with my first “real” post with my thinkings on the future of rallying / WRC after the drawback of Subaru and Suzuki, the financial crisis, etc.

Until then, happy rallying!
